The Four Tenets of Street Safety
⚡Awareness – Stay alert to your surroundings and traffic flow while walking or crossing streets. Make eye contact with drivers, avoid using headphones or phones near intersections, and stay aware of blind spots and turning vehicles.
⚡ Preparation – Plan your route to use crosswalks and pedestrian signals whenever possible. Wear reflective and bright clothing even in the day time.
⚡ Community – Support safer streets by advocating for better crosswalks, bike lanes, and traffic calming measures. Encourage neighbors and local officials to improve street lighting, install speed bumps, and maintain clear signage. Put signage up in yards and high traffic areas.
⚡ Education - Teach pedestrians and cyclists about right-of-way rules, help drivers understand how to share the road safely, and promote safety practices like making eye contact with drivers, using crosswalks, and wearing reflective gear. Educating the community helps create safer streets for everyone.

Pickup trucks and SUVs dominate our roadways. And as these vehicles grow in popularity and size, so does the risk to people around them – when drivers unknowingly hit people directly in front of them because of blind zones just past the hood.
The auto industry has the ability to tackle this glaring problem with lower hood heights and technology like pedestrian detection or cameras. But in the majority of pickups and SUVs, they haven’t! Join with us in calling on automakers to make safety their top priority and fix front-end blind zones now.
